Blepharoplasty: A Surgical Procedure That is Eye-Opening
Wednesday, June 17, 2015
As we’ve seen in recent years, reports are observing that more and more men are seeking cosmetic or
plastic surgery. Among
those surgical procedures is blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. While men
appear to be more likely to keep mum about their plastic surgery than women
are, there is no need to feel embarrassed about undergoing an eyelid surgery,
as it can be beneficial to your eyes’ health.
Though a blepharoplasty can be done
to treat eyelid puffiness in the lower eyelids, it can also be administered to
treat excess skin (sometimes combined with a chemical peel), overall droopy
eyelids, or excess fat. When people age, eyelids can stretch out. The stretch
of the skin around the eyes not only causes the muscles supporting the eyelids
to weaken, but it can also cause other issues than just droopy eyelids: sagging
eyebrows and under-eye bags are among the indicators. However, when your
eyelids stretch out and are exhibiting these indicators, it can possibly cause
vision issues, such as reducing peripheral vision and making it hard to see in
the upper and outer parts of your field of vision. Even if it’s just one
portion of your field of vision that is being affected, undergoing an eyelid
surgery can help improve your overall vision.
While both men and women oftentimes undergo this surgical procedure to look younger
than their actual age, it’s not just the stresses of everyday life that can
contribute to droopy eyelids or excess fat around the eyes. Hereditary factors,
loss of the deeper tissue in the upper cheek, or a
body not producing enough of the protein collagen are among other factors that
can contribute to eyelid puffiness or droopy eyelids.
As many news outlets are reporting
that blepharoplasty was one of the top
seven plastic surgery procedures in 2014, it’s no surprise that a great
deal of these patients were men. However, like with any surgical procedure,
it’s important to talk to your doctor about the possibilities and outcomes
before committing to the surgery. As with any surgery, there are always risks
involved. If you are considering an eyelid surgery, besides the added benefit
of having a more youthful-looking appearance, the improvements it can bring to
your vision are (literally) eye opening.
