3 Things to Know Before Going For A Facelift

Many of us wish for never-ending youth, for there to be an elixir we could drink to stay young and beautiful forever. Even though there’s no elixir fountain, one can still turn the clock around through cosmetic surgeries. Cosmetic surgeries have gained fame in recent time as more and more men and women desire to appear the same as they did 20 years ago every time they look in the mirror.

Although surgeries are risky procedures, a new kind of facial rejuvenation called facelift has become immensely popular. It’s not a typical surgery that involves a lengthy operation but is a simple procedure that is done in phases over several sittings.

Initially, this facial treatment resulted in a plastic looking face during its use in the 90s. However, since then, technology has advanced and today, the procedure leaves the person with a fresher looking face. Anyone deciding to renew their looks through face-lifting must know a few things:

  1. What a facelift actually is
Before going for the procedure or even approaching a surgeon, it is important to know what a facelift actually does. Facelift literally lifts your face; it doesn't in any way modify any facial feature. It only tightens the muscles, removes fat and fills jowls around the concerned areas, generally the eyes, nose and mouth. Since it only rejuvenates your skin and takes it a few years back, it is necessary to set your expectations accordingly.
  2. Knowing when you're ready
Since everyone ages differently, there's no set age of being eligible for a facelift. Therefore, there are a few things to notice to know if you are ready for one:

    • Sagging neck, chin and jaw line or losing facial fats
    • Having crowfeet around the eyes and widening laugh lines near the mouth
    • Wrinkles around the eyes and lips

The above factors are the more visible ones although many people go for facelifts as soon as they feel like losing freshness on their face. It is also very important for patients to be in good health and have not been smoking or drinking for at least a month before the procedure.

  3. How long will it last?
Since a facelift merely lifts the sagging skin, the effects last for a limited time - normally between 6 months to 2 years. This depends on various factors such as age of the person as the skin takes longer to age in younger patients than older ones.

The longevity of the facelift is also subject to the care taken after the process. This includes moisturizing and protecting the skin from sun for at least a few weeks after the procedure. Patients are also advised to stop drinking and smoking during the early recovery period.

This basic motive of a facelift is to make one look naturally younger and more youthful; it doesn't transform one into someone else, so never expect to come out looking like a movie star after the procedure.
