USA Today Article - What to Ask When Selecting a Plastic Surgeon
Sunday, September 25, 2011
USA Today recently published an article for patients seeking treatment from plastic or cosmetic surgeons. The article, "What to Ask When Picking a Plastic or Cosmetic Surgeon" gives consumers tips to asking the right questions of your surgeon, links to accredited centers and organizations, as well as an enlightening video.
According to Dr. Allison Holzapfel, "The
American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Plastic
Surgery have very stringent criteria for certification and recertification of
their members. Maintenance of certification requirements by these boards help
to ensure that a certified surgeon is qualified to provide plastic surgery.
Hospital privileges are also extremely important for your surgeon to obtain.
Usually, only board-eligible or board-certified surgeons who have completed
stringent training programs and testing can obtain hospital privileges. This is
yet another screening process a qualified surgeon will go through. Even if your
surgeon operates out of a surgery center, hospital privileges will allow
continuity of care should any complications arise." It is important
for the public to know "that an in-office surgery suite can be opened by
any physician with a license to practice medicine, board certified or
not." When it comes to seeking medical treatment, it certainly pays
to do your homework.
