Male Breast Surgery
[Gynecomastia]

An enlarged male breast is a condition that affects
an estimated 40 to 60 percent of all men. Although this
condition is rarely talked about, it is actually very
common.
About the Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is performed
under twilight or general anesthesia. Excessive breast
tissue and fat are removed occasionally as well as skin
from around the areola. A small incision, less than
a half-inch in length is made around the areola. An
Ultrasonic probe (cannula) is then inserted into the
incision. Using the cannula, the surgeon liquefies the
layers of fat beneath the skin and suctions it away.
In some cases where large amounts of fat have been removed,
excess skin may have to be removed to readjust to the
new breast contour, and the areola can be made smaller
as well. Recovery from this procedure is 3 to
5 days. A support garment should be worn for 4 weeks.
Light exercise is allowed after 2 to 3 weeks.
